Macrophages and dendritic cells

macrophage

Professional antigen presenting cells (APC), including dendritic cells (DC) and macrophages, perform crucial roles in both initiating inflammation and adaptive immune responses, as well as in mediating resolution of inflammation and preventing autoimmune disease. Detection of pathogens or tissue damage, processing of microbial and self antigens, and interaction with T cells and B cells are just some of the tasks performed by these APC that are essential for orchestrating a successful immune defence. The immunology research group uses animal models of infection, inflammation, healing, and autoimmune disease, combined with phenotypic and functional characterisation of DC and macrophages to reveal the involvement of these cells during normal and abnormal immune responses.
